Parraweena Reserve Remediation Concept Plan

Plans to remediate and renew Parraweena Avenue Reserve are in progress following the discovery of small fragments of bonded asbestos fibro in December 2022.

Based on specialist advice, a Landscape Concept Plan has now been developed to ensure the most effective remedial approach which will incorporate the renewal and upgrade of the entire reserve including all new facilities.

The approach to remediation involves retaining the existing soil in place and covering the area with a geotextile layer. This will be followed by adding a layer of capping soil to a depth of approximately 300mm. By adopting this approach, we will minimise risks to the community and effectively manage any potential contamination across the entire site. This is a common method of addressing contamination of this type.

Upon finalisation of the remedial works, Council will incorporate the replacement of the playground and provide pathways encircling the Reserve and provide a formal link from Parraweena Avenue to the school. A multi-purpose hard court is also proposed, however, its inclusion will be dependent on adequate funds being available.

The replacement of the playground and construction of new pathways are also proposed as part of these works. The construction of the multi-purpose court is dependent on the remaining funding available for this project.

The detailed design is now being developed for the project to allow for the procurement of a suitable contractor to be engaged for construction to commence later this year. To minimise disturbance to the adjoining school, work may be scheduled, if possible, during the Christmas school holidays.

After receiving a substantial number of submissions and requests from the public, it has been agreed to push back the closure date to 28 June 2024 at 5pm.
