What’s Happening?
The Hills Shire Council is preparing to introduce a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) waste collection service to all households.
A FOGO service is where food waste is collected through the green bin for recycling instead of the red bin for disposal to landfill. The NSW Government is requiring the new bin service by 1 July 2030 to assist in achieving its targets to halve the amount of organics waste sent to landfill and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The new FOGO service is planned to begin in the next waste contracts which commence on 1 October 2027.
Previous community consultation and research have helped inform the future FOGO service model.
Details of the adopted service model are:
No change to the existing weekly red bin and fortnightly yellow bin collection schedule
Green bins changed from a fortnightly to a weekly collection schedule
Properties without a green bin will be provided with one. E.g. rural households
Food waste collected in the green bin instead of your red bin
To help with food recycling in the kitchen, a kitchen caddy (small countertop bin) and an ongoing supply of compostable caddy liners will be provided. This will make it easier to take your food waste from your kitchen to your green bin.
How You Can Contribute
We are seeking your feedback to better understand your engagement preferences and to guide education program development for the new service. Your feedback will help us design a successful FOGO implementation campaign that aligns with community needs.
All participants who complete the survey may enter the draw to win one of five $100 Coles Group & Myer Gift Cards (Terms and Conditions apply - see Document section on this page). Don’t miss your chance to have your say and win!
